No Idea Gastropub

By One Place Team   |   Review   |   Published June 08, 2015

When a colleague asked me to fill in for her to review a restaurant I had never heard of, No Idea Gastropub, I figured, "why not"? What I found was a surprisingly intimate and warm restaurant which provided a beautiful setting to enjoy unique, fresh food.

The restaurant is on Soi 22, in a busy spot which belies the warm and unhurried atmosphere within. No Idea looked unimposing enough from the outside, but was surprisingly and understatedly opulent once we entered. We were greeted by the co-owners, Blair (also the head chef) and Dave, both New Zealanders who have brought their iconoclastic and original vision for gastropub food to the Land of Smiles.

My dinner companion and I took great pleasure in the first two courses of cheese, the first a Cecina de Leon with smoked Spanish beef, yellow peach, burrata, and mint. This featured pomegranates, which popped in the mouth, and peaches, which seemed to be infused with some sort of liquor I could not define. Combined, they achieved an amazing synchronicity, in which each of the ingredients together was much more delicious than the sum of each of them them would be alone. This was followed by a goat's cheese souffle which was rich, elegant, and sumptuous, making me feel as though I could simply stop there and be content. Read More from the original article...

No Idea Gastropub was a very pleasant surprise, to say the least. It far exceeded my expectations. The old saying must be true -- "What's in a name?"

The New York Times - Bangkok for Wine Lovers?

Published: February 3, 2012

The new wine bar openings show no sign of slowing. No Idea (8/3-4 Sukhumvit 22; 66-2-663-6686; noideabkk.com), a wine bar and gastropub that opened in a polished concrete and dark timber space two months ago, is already drawing attention for its extensive stock of antipodean wines. “I wanted a casual place where you’d be happy to come for great wine and a good steak but not at five-star prices,” said David Hallam, who modeled No Idea after the restaurants at vineyards in his native New Zealand. Its limited by-the-glass selection is more than compensated for by the 40-odd labels he offers by the bottle.

Street Smarts: Cool Soi Doubles down

Published: November 17, 2013

Sukhumvit Soi 22 is Bangkok's up-and-coming buzzworthy nightlife destination with cultured clubs, a members-only cinema, a home for the musical underground that's Overground, New Zealand culinary whiz Dave Hallam's gastropub No Idea, a name as cheeky as his Guiness Braised Beef Cheeks or signature Lamb Shank Redemption, one of Asia's best all-girl heavy metal bands playing in Titanium, and a new bar and diner from Bangkok's King of All Nightlife, Ashley Sutton, that is quite simply the bomb. This piece ran in Hong Kong's Sunday Morning Post as the lead Review story this week. Read more...
